2017/2018 - Our Academic Year By The Numbers

The 2017-2018 academic year was another successful year for us thanks to the students, educators, partners & portfolio company partners we work with! We turned four, we were one of six innovative projects selected to receive funding through Round 2 of Ontario Centres of Excellence’s (OCE) AdvancingEducation program that has allowed us to facilitate 6 Social with our project partners at the Royal Conservatory of Music, Learning Through The Arts. We surpassed our Hour of Code week goal for the second year in a row by classrooms from across the DSBN logging 2,168,673 minutes. We maintained an active role on the Planning Committee to host another successful CONNECT Education Conference that welcome over 2,000 attendees and we welcomed 50 students for a sold out 12-hour Social Innovation Hackathon at Empowerment Matters. We hosted our first Regional Pitch Competition for the Technovation Challenge (check out this article about our gold & bronze Junior Division winners here) and grew our reach attracting 34 teams to the Niagara Chapter this year - up 12 teams from last year. We introduced students to career opportunities in Niagara by taking 45 DSBN Academy students Downtown St.Catharines for a reverse career day called, “Career Crawl” and strengthened our partnership with the Brock University ConEd student association, facilitating workshops at their Holiday Extravaganza & Spring Play Day as well as presenting at their conference. We were introduced to the Ministry of Education’s Innovation Incubation & Design Branch and featured as one of the spots on their Innovation in Learning tour. We assisted two student entrepreneurs with the launch of a student run App Development Club currently in its second successful run (with a summer camp around the corner), and we participated in a variety of conferences, sharing best-practices and opportunities along the way.

We have an exciting lineup of events, programs & opportunities lined up for the 2018-2019 academic year and our 5th year anniversary! Have a safe summer & stay tuned!
