ihub Innovation Matters: Launching into 2016-2017

On October 25 we hosted ihub Innovation Matters at the DSBN Education Centre, where we officially launched ihub into the 2016-2017 school year. The event went off without a hitch and we owe this success to all of our attendees who came, saw, networked and ate! Our Regional Innovation Centre, Innovate Niagara provided food for the evening and the Faculty of Education at Brock University generously donated the grand prize, an iPad Air!

We’ve made many progressive strides this past year and ihub Innovation Matters celebrated not only our milestones but the continued successes of our valued educational partners, Portfolio companies and industry allies in the areas of innovation, education and entrepreneurship. We are the bridge between EdTech innovation and the K-12 classroom but beyond connecting these parties to innovate the modern education experience we are an entity born out of collaboration - a collaboration between entrepreneurs, students, educators, researchers, innovators and the business community. Our diverse ecosystem enriches our successes and partnerships with the mentioned parties has lead to mutual successes for Niagara. Approximately 100 attendees joined us and among the new and familiar faces was St.Catharines Mayor Walter Sendzik, we are grateful he could attend along with members from the education and business sectors in Niagara and beyond. Educators from the District School Board of Niagara (DSBN), Brock University, Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board(HWDSB) along with Niagara-based librarians, DSBN superintendents, educational decision makers and community leaders came together to mingle with our diverse network of partners and portfolio companies. Attendees were the first to preview our new Interactive Entrepreneurial Toolkit (stay tuned for launch date details), blog page and updated events calendar. Our vendor-style event welcomed ally companies; RV Space, Word Cube, Brainspace and EQAO Quizzer to showcase their innovations, along with our portfolio companies; Cube For Teachers, Enable Education, Caribou Math Contests, The Writing Project, The Recess Project, who shared their successes with guests. Our educational partners; Niagara College, Brock University and DSBN were all represented by Research & Innovation (Niagara College), Faculty of Education (Brock University) and Media Services (DSBN). Our innovative educators, Lee Martin (elementary teacher at Central Public School) and Jill Russell (secondary teacher at DSBN Academy); partner incubator, BioLinc and Innovate Niagara also joined the celebration! Attendees were challenged to network and meet new people for a chance to win the event prize. New connections were made and as winner of the event prize Laura Martin of Niagara Falls Public Library said, “I look forward to pursuing some of the contacts I made and seeing some partnerships grow.” We too are looking forward to seeing these new connections flourish!
